A look at 100 paid ads suggests the category is moving beyond sweat and electrolytes. The larger contest is to become part of more moments in people's lives.
The hydration aisle is beginning to resemble a personality test.
There is a powder for the person who trains before breakfast, a can for the festival weekend, something for the school pickup, something for the airport and, in Liquid Death's case, an energy drink for the “extreme sport” of parenting.
Hydration brands are still selling fluids, electrolytes and energy. Increasingly, they are also selling a role in your day: the drink for the airport, the late shift, the match, the festival or the school run.
We wanted to see how far that shift had gone. So we looked at 100 paid Facebook creatives—20 each from Gatorade, Liquid I.V., LMNT, Celsius and Liquid Death—dated from April through July 2026. For each ad, we asked a simple question: What is happening in the person's life when this product becomes relevant?
We used an Adology Knowledge Set to bring the five brands' paid ads together, remove obvious repeats and compare the moments each creative depicted. It saved us from trying to infer a category pattern from a folder full of screenshots.
That question also changes what we mean when we call one of these companies a lifestyle brand.
